A lot of things were promised when SmackDown vs Raw 2008 was announced including new animations, smarter CPU AI and the introduction of ECW. The ECW brand was now officially under the WWE banner with weekly shows airing every week, so Yukes & THQ wanted to capitilize by adding a ECW roster to their yearly video game. Fans instead got 8 ECW characters in total.
SmackDown vs Raw 2008 had other issues too; the new fighting style system wasn't overly praised, the new 24/7 mode featured both the regular WWE Superstar "season" mode along with GM Mode (forcing players to choose one or the other due to separate saves not being allowed), and the game itself played much slower than previous iterations.
